Created for the child enrolled in a childcare center or pre-K program, ABC Music & Me is a research-based language and early literacy program built around music.. ABC Music & Me helps two to six-year-olds develop pre-literacy and language skills through a child’s most-loved rituals: music and story time.

ABC Music & Me supports the early childhood standards and requirements for “high quality programs” as defined by the National Institute for Early Education. Plus for the older age group, ABC Music & Me aligns with pre-K national and state standards.

What you’ll experience in class:

Songs and rhymes to develop phonetic awareness and early reading skills
Tapping, clacking, and ringing rhythm instruments in time with music to improve hand-eye coordination
Focused listening with music to improve skills in following directions
Instrument play to strengthen fine motor skills
Developmentally-appropriate songs to develop vocal chords and expressive speech
Learning that emphasizes storytelling, imaginative play, and taking turns

Using a small-group approach to music education, Kindermusik for the Young Child provides a pressure-free class where your child can develop a strong musical foundation by learning the concepts, language, notation, and vocabulary of music and its greatest composers.

The program is designed to prepare the young child who is eager for first experiences with musical symbols and instrument discovery but is not yet ready for formal lessons and traditional music reading with an instrument. Parents or caregivers are encouraged to attend the last 10-15 minutes of class.

What you’ll experience in class:

Singing and vocal development. . It may sound like a foreign language when your child sings “ta” and “ti-ti,” but he’s using the language of professional musicians and composers and getting ready to read and write simple rhythm patterns.
Movement. You’ll see your child dance expressively to music, giving him the practice he needs to coordinate his body movements to the sound of music. This kind of musical play not only improves musicianship, but his physical coordination as well. Reading and writing. He’ll learn melodic notation and identify pitches such as the C, A, and D notes on the treble clef, plus rhythmic notation. Eventually he’ll even compose his own music.

Bringing children of all ages together provides a dynamic and integrated learning experience for everyone. So we took favorite Kindermusik songs and activities like “Shake, Shake the Apple Tree” and “hammocking” and rolled them into a fun, family class where each child is welcomed and valued and family “together time” is celebrated and cherished.

What you’ll experience in class:

Singing. From the first “Hello” song to the last “Goodbye,” exploring a variety of musical styles and genres leads children to find their own voice. Plus singing helps with memory and recall, physical development, creativity, and socialization.
Assorted Movement. Whether moving as a family, as a class, or as individuals, Family Time movement activities enhance coordination skills, create opportunities for imitation and exploration, and give everyone something to smile, rock, bounce, or dance about.
Story Time. Reading aloud to children stimulates their curiosity, expands their knowledge, and broadens their understanding of language.
Family Jam Children (and adults) will love selecting a unique instrument and joining in one big class jam session each week.

His blanket becomes a superhero’s cape. A cardboard box doubles as her princess castle. Pots and pans become a drum set. And she sings all the time. Sound like someone you know? Every day brings a new discovery as your preschooler slowly opens the doors of individuality and independence.

Using the power of music, Kindermusik’s Imagine That! taps into your preschooler’s creative spirit and boundless energy and focuses on developing his learning strengths and self-confidence so he’ll be ready for school, prepared for future music lessons…or able to leap tall buildings.

What you’ll experience in class:

Pretend Play. Pretend play activities are integrated with music, vocal development, storytelling, listening, movement and literacy aspects of each class. When based upon a child’s real life experiences, pretend play helps develop language, sensory, motor and cognitive skills.
Musical Variety and Singing. Activities include a mixture of musical genres and styles and provide a setting for your child to explore his many voices and to use a “singing voice.” Singing helps with memory and recall, physical development, creativity and socialization.
Storytelling and Literacy. Each class is built on the development of a story, so you’ll hear preschoolers search for the word to say what they mean and try to keep up with their busy minds, emerging wants, needs, likes, and dislikes.
Parent Involvement. Preschoolers are learning to be self-sufficient in a group setting of peers, while many times still needing the emotional security provided by a parent. For your toddler, every day brings new discoveries and opportunities to explore the world around him. Despite your toddler’s seeming independence, he still longs for the safety and security of parental closeness. During this time, your toddler still relishes the comfort of the familiar while also seeking the challenge of something new.

Kindermusik Our Time encourages her to be creative, to initiate her own ideas and to respond in her own ways, while your active participation gives her the security she needs. As you play instruments, sing, move, and explore, you’ll uncover an engaging musical world while building your child’s confidence, self-control and communications skills.

What you’ll experience in class:

Instrument exploration and ensemble skill development. Your child will explore the physical characteristics and sounds of age-appropriate instruments which will eventually lead her to discover her potential for beat, rhythm, and melodic ensemble playing.
Vocal play. Through vocal play, toddlers learn to form vowels and consonants, say words and phrases, and imitate rhythm and vocal inflection. In Kindermusik Our Time, vocal play is presented within the context of songs, chants, and activities done in class.
Exploration Time. Your child will love discovering specially designed instruments, textures, sounds and movements.
Story time and early literacy. Listening to stories enhances language and speech development and fosters awareness of sounds, teaches use of language, and sends the message that words and symbols have meaning. Who knew that you would find gazing into your baby’s eyes the most exciting part of your day? In Kindermusik, we understand how precious this time is with your little one. That’s why we created Village.

In a Kindermusik Village class, we take those special bonding moments between you and your baby and add in a unique blend of musical learning activities that stimulate and engage all of the senses. Your educator will teach you how to encourage your baby’s learning through vocal play, object exploration, instruments, and creative movement.

What you’ll experience in class:

Variety of music. Musical diversity builds strong neural networks in a baby’s forming mind, which is why each Kindermusik semester contains an array of styles, sounds, and genres.
Instrument play. Age-appropriate experiences with child-safe instruments enhances a sense of rhythm and steady beat, develops a keen awareness of the distinguishing qualities of sound, and encourages spontaneity and creativity.

OUR TEACHERS


	Kathleen Heydorn (owner, kindermusik teacher, mommy&me and pre-preschool teacher) Kathleen Heydorn, owner of Kindermusik at Western Reserve Center for the Arts, purchased this business from Terri Lenzo in 2008. Kathleen has a Masters in Early Childhood Education from Kent State University and a Bachelors in International Political Science/Japanese Studies from the University of Hawaii. A former classroom teacher, Kathleen has worked with children of all ages in Ohio, Hawaii and in Japan. Kathleen enjoys singing in her church choir, directing the K-1 choir, and spending time with her children (both former students of Miss Terri's). Kindermusik combines the two things Kathleen loves the most...music and children!
	Dana Herro (Director, Kindermusik Teacher) "I have a Bachelor's of Music Education degree from Ohio State and a Masters of Music Education degree from Kent State with my primary instrument being voice. I taught 5th and 6th grade General Music for Nordonia Hills City Schools for eight years before having my first daughter and deciding to stay at home with her. I am married to my wonderful husband, Bob and we have 2 beautiful daughters, Simone and Genevieve. I got my start in Kindermusik as a mom taking Simone to class and I fell in love with the program - so much that I decided to be bold and ask for a job! Now here I am loving every minute. It provides me the perfect balance of continuing to educate children through music and spending tons of quality time with my daughters at home. In my other "free" time, I also work part time for the amazing Felicia Lewis of FML Photo Design.

	Sharon Swetland (Kindermusik teacher) Sharon has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications with a minor in Speech and Theatre. She is probably most often recognized for her role of co-host on the Ohio Lottery's Cash Explosion Game Show, which airs on Saturday evenings. She is also a host for the Lottery's nightly drawings. Before moving to a career of primarily television work, Sharon worked as a professional actress with the regional company of The Cleveland Play House, appeared at the Great Lakes Theatre and various other professional theatre companies. Her work with children and music started with musical theatre and youth theatre training. Kindermusik is a wonderful blend for her dedication to children - music, childhood development, education, and personal interaction during those precious first few years.

	Maria Jacobs (Kindermusik teacher) Maria Jacobs is a singer/songwriter and jazz vocalist. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from Ohio State University. She will also return to school this fall at Kent State to achieve a music education degree. Maria has many credits to her name as a performer and songwriter. One of Maria’s songs, So This Is Love, will soon be heard as the theme song for a webisode by the same name. She opened up for jazz trumpeter Chuck Mangione in LA and Bob Dorough here in Ohio. Maria has one complete album out entitled No Frills. Maria teaches Imagine That and Young Child and private voice lessons between our Hudson and Tallmadge locations.
	Melissa Chapin (Kindermusik Teacher) Melissa received her Bachelor of Arts in Music, with an emphasis on flute, from The University of Akron in 2005. She has been a full time nanny with The Nanny Connection for about 3 years, and taught Kindermusik with us for one year in 2008. Melissa enjoys playing flute at church, and has played at weddings, private parties, award ceremonies, and more. She is currently working on arranging and recording a lullaby CD with her musical friends. She also enjoys singing, acting, dancing, photography, and is looking forward to getting married in May of 2011! Melissa hopes to see some of her old friends from Kindermusik and meet many more this Fall at Western Reserve CFA
	Leslie Fedock (Kindermusik Teacher)Leslie Fedock is a recent graduate of Malone University in Canton, OH. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts and a minor in Music. Leslie joined her first choir in fifth grade and has been passionate about music ever since. She was a dedicated member of both the band and the choir as well as the drama department throughout those twelve years of her education. She studied voice privately for eight years and plays the piano and saxophone. Leslie resides in the small, rural community of Marshallville, OH where she was born and raised but will make a move after her wedding in June of 2012. Leslie has a strong passion for both music and children and loves being able to incorporate both into a job she loves.
	Amy Long (Kindermusik Teacher) Miss Amy has been an elementary teacher in the Medina City Schools for the past 12 years. She currently teaches kindergarten, and has also taught 1st and 2nd grade. This fall, she will teach kindergarten part time in order to teach Kindermusik classes and to spend more time with her family. Amy and her husband Jay, are the proud parents of 5 year-old twins, Kylie and Garrett, and 1 year-old Gavin. Amy and her family live in Wooster.
	Keri Lambert (Student Teacher) Music has been an important part of Miss Keri's life since she was a child. She has been in various singing groups throughout her life as well as performing in musical theatre. She also has a background in dance. Miss Keri comes to us after being a Kindermusik mom and falling in love with the program. She has over 10 years experience in teaching children and is very excited to do her Kindermusik training with us so that she may teach full time in the future.

What class is best for my child?

Each class, from newborns to those who are ready for more advanced musical training, is designed to be appropriate for your child’s current developmental level. In addition, our teachers take the time to tailor activities to best fit the makeup of each individual class. We’ve provided a description of each of our current classes under the logos at the bottom of this page, as well as some helpful guidelines here for a child who is in that “in-between class” age.

May I join a class at any time?

Yes, we’d be delighted to have you! The Kindermusik curriculum is structured so that you may join at any point during the session. If you enroll after the session has begun, your tuition will be prorated. Just call or email us for more information.

What is your inclement weather policy?

If the school district where your Kindermusik studio is located is closed due to inclement weather, that studio's classes will be cancelled, unless you hear otherwise from your teacher.

If the school district is running late, your Kindermusik studio will remain open, unless you hear otherwise from your teacher.

For evening and weekend classes, the classes will be cancelled based on the discretion of the owner and/or director. If class will be cancelled your teacher will call you to let you know. In years past, we have typically cancelled evening classes when Kent State has been closed.

What is your refund policy?

Like other activities your child is enrolled in, whether swimming, dance or soccer, when you register, we reserve a space in the class for your child for the entire semester. As classes have a maximum number of children we can accept, we unfortunately sometimes have to turn away students, because your space is entirely committed to your child, and we will not give it away, or double book.

As our registration form states, tuition is NON-refundable. There are of course, special circumstances, such as a move out of the area, but these are dealt with on an individual basis.

What is your makeup policy?

If your child misses a class, we are happy to accommodate up to three make-up classes per semester. These classes must be made up during the same semester, unless special arrangements are made. Please contact our director, Dana Herro, at admin@westernreservecfa.com to schedule your makeup.

NOTE: You must contact Dana and there are no dropins, as not all classes will have room to accept make-up students.

Can I bring siblings to class?

Our studio policy is that only enrolled children are allowed in the classroom. We find that the chemistry of the class works best when the same people are in the room from week to week and when children are surrounded by peers of the same age group. We also do not allow unattended siblings under the age of 7 to wait in the waiting room. For familes who are looking to enjoy music class together, we DO offer Our Time Sibling classes and Family Time. Both of these classes allow you to bring enrolled siblings. For both of these classes, infants are free until they turn 8 months old!

I have a Kindergartner. Should I put him in Young Child, or start him with private instruction on a "real" instrument like piano?

Young Child uses “real instruments”, like an accurately pitched glockenspiel, a dulcimer and recorder. Using the principles of Suzuki, Kodaly, Dalcroze and Orff, students explore many facets of the musical experience-speaking, singing, moving, dancing, listening, creating and playing instruments, as well as learning to read and write music. Young Child helps every child develop a confident, joyful voice for singing and speaking as well as essential building blocks for a future of learning.

Kindermusik Educators who are also private piano teachers tell us those children who begin lessons much before 7 or 8 are not any farther ahead of the child who begins at a later age. Kindermusik is foundational to ALL the activities your child will want to do – soccer, private music lessons, reading, math, making friends and more!

My child has special needs. Is Kindermusik for her?

Absolutely! Autistic children, children with speech difficulty or delays, children with Down’s syndrome, hearing impaired children and those with other physical, emotional and learning disorders have generally thrived AND improved with Kindermusik. What the program can do for children with special needs is ten-fold greater than even what it does for those without disabilities.

NOTE: we can meet the needs of your child best if you let us know of any special needs or concerns when you register your child.

My child sings all the songs and does all the activities at home, but just sits there during class. Is that ok?

Not to worry! He is learning even though YOU don’t see him participating. Pushing children to perform has no place in an Early Childhood program of any kind. We believe that you – the parent – is the child’s most important teacher, and home is the most important place for that learning to grow.

When you stop and think about it, you already know that success should be measured more by what a child does all the rest of the week than what he does in the 45 minutes at Kindermusik class. And remember, Kindermusik is about process, not performance. Every child can be successful in a Kindermusik class, not matter what developmental level he is on. So have a blast dancing, singing, and playing instruments together at home the way we do in class! Before you know it, the same thing will happen at the studio.

Can babies truly benefit from Kindermusik?

We’ve learned that infants are born with billions of nerve cells and a nearly unlimited potential for connections between those nerve cells. Every time an infant has a sensory experience, neural pathways are formed. The greater the number of neural pathways, the greater the brain power. Rich sensory environments are vital to the brain development of infants.

In a Village class, we dance in a social setting to allow infants to understand and anticipate patterns, which preps their brains for math and musical theory. We play with steady beat, which underlies our ability to pick up the pattern of language. This is vital, because unless children can pick up the language patterns, they cannot learn to read and write.

The bonding and comforting activities we show you in class help you and baby to work through all the natural stresses that occur with growing and developing. Music increases coordination and balance, promotes literacy and language, cultivates listening skills, and encourages delightful and rewarding interaction with your baby!
